Meeting of the Jury of the Ivan Franko International Prize – 2021

The name of the winners of the Ivan Franko International Prize 2021 will be named after interdisciplinary scientific discussion of the International jury to will be held on  August 25, 2021 at the Drohobych Ivan Franko State Pedagogical University.

During session of the jury every academic paper-nominee shall be summarized by a jury member in the form of a scientific report. Jury members discuss submitted scientific papers in the interdisciplinary discussions with the analysis of reliability, validity and mastering.

Prize winners have to comply with position of Ivan Franko, expressed during his life: “this work is thoroughly critical, the work of a cold mind, inspired by a great idea of entirety and originality…”

The jury members select winners based on own knowledge, assess professional competence in the scientific field and international level of scientific achievements. Comparison of scientific papers is performed based on interdisciplinary basis. Nomination “for significant personal contribution to development of social and human sciences” also assesses the individual contribution of the author of scientific paper in the development of social and human sciences.

The decision on the winner of the Prize is taken during the secret ballot, a ballot for which contains all scientific papers-nominees of one category.

The results of reception of the scientific works received within the framework of the Ivan Franko International Prize 2019

On Friday, March 15, 2021, at 13:00, a press conference dedicated to scientific works received within the framework of the Ivan Franko International Prize 2019 will be held at the press center of the Ukrinform information agency (8/16, Khmelnytskoho St.).

The list of applicants for the Ivan Franko International Prize in the field of social and human sciences and Ukrainian studies will be made public at the event.

Event participants:

Roland Franko, chairman of the board of the Ivan Franko International Fund;

Yaroslav Harasym, member of the board of the Fund, prorector of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, doctor of philological sciences, professor;

Volodymyr Buhrov, member of the board of the Fund, rector of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, candidate of philosophical sciences, professor;

Ihor Kurus, director of the Ivan Franko International Fund.

We would like to remind you that Ivan Franko International Prize is awarded in two nominations:   for significant advances (achievements) in the field of Ukrainian studies and for significant
advances (achievements) in the field of social and human sciences. It is an annual prize, which is awarded on August 27, on the day of Ivan Franko’s birthday. The Prize laureates are presented a monetary award and a golden laureate’s badge.

Prize laureates from previous years:

In 2016 – Lubomyr Husar, Major Archbishop emeritus of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, Cardinal of the Catholic Church.

In 2017, Michael Moser – professor at the University of Vienna, president of the International Association of Ukrainian Studies – won in the nomination “for significant advances (achievements) in the field of Ukrainian studies”, and in the nomination “for significant advances (achievements) in the field of social and human sciences”, the award was given to Oleh Shabliy – academician and honorary professor of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv.

In 2018, Yaroslava Melnyk – professor of the Ukrainian Catholic University (Lviv) and Ukrainian Free University (Munich) – became a laureate in the nomination “for significant advances (achievements) in the field of Ukrainian studies”, and in the nomination “for significant advances (achievements) in the field of social and human sciences”, the award was given to Yohannes Remy – assistant professor at Columbia University (USA).

In 2019, the award went to Doctor of Philology at the University of Milan, Maria Grazia Bartolini.

In 2020 the Prize was won by Ihor Serdyuk, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor of the Department of Ukrainian History of V. G.  Korolenko Poltava National Pedagogical University.

The third Awarding Ceremony of the Laureates of the Ivan Franko International Prize will be held on August 27, 2018 at 12:00 at the home of I. Franko in Drohobych in the Lviv region (Drohobych city, Ivan Franko str., 20).

Short. The prize will be awarded in two nominations. In the nomination “for significant advances (achievements) in the field of Ukrainian studies” will receive the doctor of philological sciences, a full member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society, professor of the Ukrainian Catholic University (Lviv) and the Ukrainian Free University (Munich), head of the Department of Philology of the Ukrainian Catholic University – YAROSLAVA MELNYK .In the nomination “For significant achievements in the field of social and human sciences”, the award will be awarded to a senior lecturer in East European History at the University of Helsinki – JOHANNES REMY.

Prize laureates from previous years:

In 2017, a professor of the Institute of Slavic Studies at the University of Vienna, Michael Moser, won in the nomination “for significant advances (achievements) in the field of Ukrainian studies” with his monograph «New Contributions to the History of the Ukrainian Language”;

In 2017, an honored professor of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, academic Oleh Shabliy, won in the nomination “for significant advances (achievements) in the field of social and human sciences” with his scientific work “Social Geography” in 2 volumes.

For reference. Ivan Franko International Prize is an honorary recognition of significant achievements and considerable services of scientists in the field of Ukrainian studies and social and humanitarian sciences. The Prize was established in order to promote comprehensive study of creative, scientific and social activities of Ivan Franko and encourage scientists from around the world to conduct relevant researches in the field of social sciences and humanities and Ukrainian studies emphasizing humanistic, national, spiritual, statist sense for learning and consolidation of scientific and cultural heritage of Ukraine in the global context. The founder of the Ivan Franko International Prize is his grandson, Roland Franko.

Announcement of the nominees of Ivan Franko International Prize in 2018

On May 14, 2018, Ivan Franko International Fund  will announce the names of the nominees for the International  Prize in 2018.

This year, members of the Expert Council, from April 4 to May 10, will be evaluated for 13 scientific works in 2 nominations.

According to the Regulation, the members of the International Council of Experts within a month, from the date of receipt of documents from the Committee of the Prize, have to identify in each of the nominations no more than three works and submit them to the International Jury. When selecting nominees, members of the board of experts are guided by their own knowledge, and also compare scientific works according to the following criteria: availability of innovative and original approaches in the research; conceptuality, systematic and critical approach to research; international context and level of scientific research. In case of the absence of worthwhile works, when in any of the nominations all scientific papers scored less than 4 positive reviews of members of the Council of Experts, the Prize Committee decides not to award the Award in this nomination. Then, scientific works are submitted for consideration of the International jury in the nomination where the scientific Council of Experts identified the nominees.

In the nomination « For significant advances (achievements) in the field of social and human sciences » the following works are nominated:

  1. A study guide/ textbook: Legal Studies, by professor І. BEHEY (Lviv).
  2. A monograph « Brothers or Enemies:The Ukrainian National Movement and Russia, from the 1840s to the 1870s », by professor J. REMY (Finland).
  3. A monograph « Polyphony of the Culture of Life:Philosophical and Theological Heritage of John Paul II in Contemporary Discourse.The Religious Aspect », by professor S. PRESUKHIN (Kyiv).
  4. A monograph « Halych in the Political Life of Europe in the XI-XIV Centuries », by professor L. VOYTOVYCH (Lviv).
  5. A series of works « A Discourse on Values in Education », consisting of 7 books, by several authors under the leadership of professor V. ANDRUSHCHENKO (Kyiv).

In the nomination « For significant advances (achievements) in the field of Ukrainian studies » the following works are nominated:

  1. A monograph « The Ukrainians: Unexpected Nation », by professor WILSON (Great Britain).
  2. A monograph « Pesni blagogovejnyja (1790/1791)Eine Sammlung geistliche Lieder aus Ukraine » in two volumes, by professor H. ROTHE (FRG) and professor Yu. MEDVEDYK (Lviv).

Award of Ivan Franko International Prize (hereinafter – the Prize) is an honorary recognition of significant achievements and considerable services of scientists in the field of Ukrainian studies and social and humanitarian sciences. The Prizing ceremony will be held on September 27 at the birthplace of Ivan Franko –Drogobych City. The Prize Winners are granted with monetary remuneration and golden sign. In 2017, the prize fund amounts to 500 hundred thousand hryvnias.

Presentation of the Ivan Franko International Prize in Canada

The management of the Ivan Franko International Fund will visit Canada with a working visit. In a measure will participate Roland Franko, the Heard of the Board of Ivan Franko International Fund and Ihor Kurus, director of the Foundation.
