Liubomyr Husar: Ivan Franko International Prize is very important!
Blessed Liubomyr, the former Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, the first winner of the Ivan Franko International Prize told in an interview titled “Conflict and Las” about ecumenism*, which today is very important for uniting Christians, about formation of modern peaceful Ukraine and about the importance of such prize as the Ivan Franko International Prize.
Your Beatitude, in 2016 you became the first winner of the Ivan Franko International Prize. What does this Prize mean for you?
– I wrote and defended my PhD Thesis on ecumenical activity of Metropolitan Andrii Sheptytskyi in 1972. It was written in English in Pontifical Urban University of Rome – this is my Doctorate. When I came to Ukraine in 90s, I made many attempts to translate it into Ukrainian. Translation was done, but there were no possibility to publish it. And only in 2015, owning to the personnel of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, the translation was completed and a book was published.
As for the prize, I was greatly surprised. It was a great surprise for me that my work has received such a high appraisal of the International Jury. You know, my first thought was like this, I must honestly say, “It is a pity that it had not happen 40 years ago. For sure, it would have been a great joy for a younger man …. I, am an aged man and feel it differently.” However, it was a very big surprise. Of course, I am grateful to those who made this choice and who created this prize.
Your work was written over 40 years ago and relates to ecumenism. Do you think it is relevant to today?
– You know, this issue is very important. But there is a big difference between 70s and present time. For me personally, the difference is that a lot has changed. Now, there is access to certain documents that I have not had a chance to see before, when I was writing my PhD Thesis. Unfortunately, it is quite hard for me to add something, but I sincerely hope that younger scholars will be engaged in this process. It a quite different atmosphere – Ukrainian. It is, on the one hand, is very positive, since it is Ukrainian, and, on the other hand, this atmosphere could have been better if we had worked more towards the unification of Christians in Ukraine – the issue on which Metropolitan Sheptytskyi worked hard at the time.
The representatives of the Ivan Franko International Fund believe that by promoting prize in scientific world, the Ukrainian humanitaristics may get new incentives for development. Do you share these expectations?
– Yes, probably so! I am very happy that there is such an International Fund, because we need it! We had been so many years under occupation, where the occupants were not interested in development of our science, in our deeper learning of our history, and in general, and raising better understanding of ourselves…Now we have such opportunity (ed. – Ivan Franko International Prize) and I think this is extremely important, and thank God that such initiative exists. God, please help it to develop and let young scientists study the topics that are increasingly important to us, Ukrainians.
According to many scientists, launching of the Ivan Franko International Prize is quite successful. Your Beatitude, what do you think what should the initiators of the prize do, so as to make it a coveted prize for the scientists in the world?
– I think that the very fact of existence, finding and rewarding works that are really useful for Ukrainian science and Ukrainian consciousness is already a great merit.
What does make the prize more attractive? I think its popularity will grow. My dream is to see development of the Ivan Franko International Prize. I wish that the monographs that will be taken into consideration, and later awarded were better and of higher level every time. I think owning to combination of these measures this prize will gain greater prestige!

Ivan Franko International Prize: Half a Million for Scientific Achievements!
Roland Franko, the grandson of Ukrainian classic Ivan Franko, devoted his entire life to popularization of his grandfather’s creative legacy. Mister Roland is the last descendant bearing Franko surname in Ukraine; therefore, he does everything possible to reveal a truthful image of this spiritual colossus, apostle of truth and Great Kamenyar.
Being 84 years old Roland Franko is the Heard of the Board of Ivan Franko International Fund founded at his initiative in 2015. Let us ask Mister Roland about the scope of activities of the Fund.
Ivan Franko International Fund was founded in 2015. Was it your initiative?
Yes. I`ve always wanted to create something in commemoration of my grandfather; something that will unveil his heritage to scientific and ideological successors not only in Ukraine but also throughout the world. Today, the primary goal of the Fund is Ivan Franko International Prize, which would help us learn more about Franko as well as draw attention to humanitaristics in Ukraine and the world.
There is a number of Franko prizes in Ukraine. Can you tell us about your International Prize and people who are awarded this Prize?
Ivan Franko International Prize is an annual non-governmental award with two nominations, namely, for significant achievements in the field of Ukrainian Studies and in the field of social and humanitarian sciences. Any researcher from any country of the world (having diplomatic relations with Ukraine) can become a laureate of the Prize. All academic institutions and higher education institutions may submit their research papers as well as the previous Prize laureates.
Why is Ivan Franko International Prize that important?
The Prize is a new phenomenon for the development of Ukrainian science and Ukraine in general. It is a kind of an elevator, which should pull Ukrainian science out of sovietization and academic corrupt practices. At the same time, the Prize uncloses Ukraine to scientists who are public opinion leaders in the West. Thus, the Prize should become a kind of “window to Ukraine” for humanitarians of the world. It is extremely important for the development of Ukraine especially now, under Russian aggression! We do everything possible to make Ivan Franko International Prize, alongside Nobel Prize, one of the most coveted awards for scientists!
Quite ambitious goal. Who supports you?
We rely upon charitable contribution on the part of the votaries of Franko and Ukrainian science. As of today, we are able to provide the inducement fund of 500,000 hryvnias. For example, Taras Shevchenko State Prize is only 190,000 hryvnias. However, we want to ensure non-prejudicial evaluation of research papers, strong competition and high cost of the Prize able to quicken interest of the world`s scientific elite. There`s a lot of heavy lifting left.
Who can make such contributions and how?
Anyone can make a contribution to the inducement fund. There is a bank account accumulating funds at the website of the Fund, www.frankoprize.com.ua.
The Laureate of the previous Ivan Franko International Prize is Lubomyr Husar, isn`t he?
Yes, His Beatitude Lubomyr Husar was announced the first winner last year for his monograph “Andrii Sheptytskyi Galician Metropolitan (1901-1944), a Forerunner of Ecumenism”. To my mind, we had a wonderful and peremptory laureate as well as a vigorous and genuine debate in Vienna. The most important thing is that the scientific world has finally started to acknowledge the Prize.
Acceptance of papers competing for Ivan Franko International Prize began on January 15, 2017 and will continue until March 1. How many papers have already been submitted?
Today, we have 10 research papers that will compete for the Prize. However, there is still some time left and we are always eager and ready to accept papers until March 1. If you are interested and willing to submit your research paper, please find more information on our website – www.frankoprize.com.ua.
Are you going to hold the jury session in Vienna again?
Yes, according to our calendar plan, there will be an international jury session in Vienna on June 23-25, where the laureates will be determined. On August 27, on the day of Ivan Franko`s birth, we look forward to welcome the winners who will be awarded with the Prize and a golden lapel pin of the laureate.
What other goals does Ivan Franko Fund set itself?
The Fund is a non-governmental organization, we cannot do plenty of things at once, but we can drive them forward. In addition to the Prize, our achievement in 2016 was the opening of the memorial flat of Ivan Franko family in Kyiv.
We do many things. Nevertheless, most attention is paid to the Prize. I want all Ukrainians to understand that Ivan Franko worked for their benefit all his life.

The main objective of the Museum is to glorify courage, patriotism, love of freedom of Ivan Franko and his family. Life of Franko`s family serves an example of self-sacrificing attitude towards his people in whirl of everyday fight for the truth and justice.
This Museum establishment has been created in the building, where the family of Taras Franko was resettled by the Soviet government out of Lviv in 1949.
The whole family of Taras Ivanovych lived in this apartment. The daughter of Taras and sister of Roland – Dariia-Liubomyra – had been living here and maintaining it up to 2015.
The Museum consists of two halls, where the archive documents, photographs from the family archive are kept. There is a memorial room partially displaying the mode of life of the family of Taras Franko, items of the interior, documents and works of Tars, Zinovii, Dariia and Roland Franko. The exposition dedicated to the children of Ivan Franko: Adnrii, Petro, Taras and Anna, whose life is also associated with Kyiv, is represented, as well.
It shall be noted that the Museum has been established upon the initiative of the grandson of Ivan Franko, Roland, and Ivan Franko International Prize participated as the organizer of the event.
Extraordinary Franko`s family
The children of Franko are prominent figures. Taras is a Doctor of Philosophy in Linguistics and translator, the enthusiast of sport development in Halychyna area, educationist, journalist, inventor and artist. Petro is an educationist, writer, scientist-chemist, founder of the sport society “Ukraine”, co-founder of “Plast”. Anna is an vigorous social activist, an activist of the Red Cross.
Franko`s family was not only the first humanitarians, but also the athletes. There are not many those who know that Franko`s children have been the founders of sport clubs. They were the first, who published the book on the Swedish drill – physical drill – in Ukrainian, told Ihor Kurus.
The grandchildren of Ivan Franko, children of Taras, continued the honoured traditions of their family. Zinoviia-Rostyslava, the Doctor of Philosophy in Linguistics, social activist, openly supported the arrested Sixtiers, what resulted into repressions against her by the Soviet government. Daria-Liubomyra is also a Doctor of Philosophy in Linguistics, “the guardian” of the heritage of Franko’s family. Roland-Oleksandr is a Doctor of Technical Science, has 50 scientific papers and inventions.
Owing to his standing, Ukraine has obtained a pole station on the Northern Pole named after Academician Vernadskyi (former name, after Faraday) from Great Britain on a free basis. At present, Roland is the Head of the Board of Ivan Franko International Prize, the initiator of the international prize named after Ivan Franko (which, by the way, was awarded to Liubomyr Huzar the previous year).
About the Apartment – Museum
It is a common apartment in Kyiv, but without denying, it is located in the very centre, near the Opera House. High ceilings, wide corridors, spacious rooms. No repair, stylish repair or at least a simple one, has been made. Indeed, it is not eclectic palaces of Yanukovyches-Pshonkas, but there are much more content in those walls.
The exposition is placed in two rooms. There are pictures on the walls, particularly of the brush of Taras Farnko. He made many illustrations to his father’s works. He also made the portrait of Ivan Yanovych. All signatures in the pictures are original, written with hands of the painter himself.
There are stands with books, documents, photographs, typed works and letters along the walls. There is also a work table of Taras Ivanovych and a typewriter “Continental”. It is not the original one, but the very one ordered in Poland at that time, about which the Museum administrators have found out from the letter of Taras to his sister.
An original photograph, where young Petro and Taras Franko are among the Society “Sokil”, a photograph of the marriage of Taras to Kateryna Franko-Falkevych, are among the other exhibits of the Museum. An original book “The First Ukrainian Practical Cuisine” by Olha Franko, typed but unpublished work “The Teacher” by Anna Franko are presented there, as well.
All furniture of the Museum is original, of the time period of Ivan and Taras Farnko. Some of them have been brought by Taras from Lviv.
Actually, it is not all interesting things in the Museum. But it is better to touch the history personally.
About the future
Apartment – Museum will open for the visitors next week. According to Ihor Kurus, visitors will enter by small groups since the premises belong to the housing fund of the city, thus, there are some features in visiting the museum.
However, ideas and activity of the researches of Franko’s life do not stop at this atage.
“We hope that the dream of Roland Tarasovych about installation of the full-size monument to Franco in Kyiv will come true, especially with such a great museum”, – hopes Ihor Kurus.
We would like to note that the Apartment-Museum was sanctified by Archbishop Drohobytskyi and Yakiv Sambirskyi, with whom Diocesan Administration Secretary Archpriest Andrii Bezushko concelebrated.

Solemn academia was held in the fifth central building of the university, where student Ivan Franko trod 125 years ago.
A lecture of the Laureate of Ivan Franko International Prize took place
A lecture of the Laureate of Ivan Franko International Prize took place at the University of Banking of the National Bank of Ukraine on November 03, 2016. Since Lubomyr Huzar could not arrive to the event due to his health condition, an academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Director of the National Academy of
Sciences of Ukraine, Professor, Head of the International Institute of Applied Mathematics and Basic Sciences, National University “Lviv Polytechnic” Stepan Pavliuk, read the lecture at will of the Blessed.
Recall that according to the PROVISION on Ivan Franko International Prize, within six months after being awarded the Prize, winner shall deliver a lecture – a popular presentation of the contents of the research paper, which was awarded the Prize.

The Members of Ivan Franko Fund convinced that the Рrize in his name will be popular in the world
Ivan Franko International Prize will soon gain a high status and will have a financial component being not less substantial allowing it to range on a par with the Nobel Prize.
Ihor Kurus, the Director of Ivan Franko International Fund, expressed such an opinion during the press conference at Ukrinform on Friday.
“The Nobel Prize has not become so popular and desirable at once as it is nowadays. Though, it is clear that it has had a financial basis for building the monetary fund. Franko Prize has also some certain basis though not as great as the Nobel’s one. It may be explained by the fact that there are no nuclear weapon designers and famous chemists among our founders but only humanity scientists. However, in some time, approximately in 5 years, in 10 years we will raise our monetary fund and it will become much bigger. We pursue the prize bund be not less than the Nobel’s one. If we achieve this in 50 years, but not in 100 it also will be a success”, replied Kurus to the questions of the agency correspondent.
At the same time he emphasised that during the first year of the prize existence they managed to break the wall of disbelief among the Western scientists and the process moved off – more and more people are talking about it every year and it will become more prestigious and consequently the prize fund will be raised.
“It is important for us that a wider range of scientists being the opinion shapers in their countries become supporters of the Prize. They will go to their universities and tell their colleagues about our discussions. Thus, the information about Ukraine will spark the interest of more people and tomorrow they will set sights on the events in Ukraine – not through the prism of the Maidans, the Chornobyl tragedy or a football player Shevchenko, but through the prism of Franko and science of Ukraine,” noted Kurus.
He also added that Franko Fund is spreading the information on the Prize what made it possible to build cooperation with several influential universities from Canada. The Fund also has got the support of the World Congress of Ukrainians being a promoter of the Ukrainian Studies in the world.
“Now it is a time when we are going to send the letters to all the universities in the world, as in the previous year. The previous year we managed to involve the Members from Japan up to Canada to the Nominee Committee. The Committee Members and experts of the International Board will also popularize the Prize and we will get works from these countries, as well. We, as the scientists, will manage to break ice of lie on Ukraine being spread by Russia today,” emphasises the Director of the Fund.
Volodymyr Buhrov, the Member of the Board of the Fund, the Vice-Rector of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, added: “Trust is very important in any case associated with the science. It is based on following some procedures. We have a sort of a sifter in the Prize allowing the most dignified people to reach the capstone – as in the example of the Nobel Committee. Obviously, it is a time consuming process but the highest criteria shall be established at the very beginning”.
