About the Charitable Organization “Ivan Franko International Fund”
CO “Ivan Franko International Fund” was established in June 2015.
The Fund was initiated by ROLAND FRANKO (Ivan Franko’s grandson), Ihor Kurus and the Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University.

Our goal: by way of publicizing and promoting Ivan Franko’s scholarly and creative legacy, and via cultural diplomacy and international scientific exchange, to accomplish the mission of the Fund – to reveal Ukraine to the world.
Our task: to encourage the scholars and intellectuals from different countries worldwide to carry out up-to-date research in social science and humanities as well as Ukrainian studies in the global context. The Fund’s projects also aim to present the unbiased vision of the Ukrainian identity phenomenon to international scientific communities and thereby to develop critical thinking and strengthen democratic principles and evaluations in modern humanities and Ukrainian studies.
The Advisory Panel of the Fund is a group of 16 scholars and public figures from Ukraine, Austria, Italy, Slovakia and Poland.
Since 2015, the Fund has been awarding the Ivan Franko International Prize. The Prize has been awarded to:

Selection of research papers
Criteria for Selection of Nominees for Winning the Prize:
- The main criterion for selection of nominees for winning the Prize is his/her professional competence in his/her field of study and international level of scientific achievements regardless of gender, religious or political preferences or ethnic origin of the author.
- The Prize shall be awarded for significant contribution to the development of social and humanitarian sciences emphasizing humanistic, national, spiritual, statist sense for learning and consolidation of scientific and cultural heritage of Ukraine in the global context.
- Prize winners have to comply with position of Ivan Franko, expressed during his life: “this work is thoroughly critical, the work of a cold mind, inspired by a great idea of entirety and originality…”
People eligible to receive the Prize
Prize winner may be any researcher or scientist whose research papers have been submitted to the Prize Committee in accordance with the Provision “On Ivan Franko International Prize” and have been recognized as the best as assessed by the International Jury.
Applicant research papers should be of international importance, belong to social and humanitarian sciences and be based on scientific understanding of historical or contemporary processes in the culture, politics and public life of Ukraine.
The same person may be the Prize winner only once.
People eligible to submit research papers
A research paper may be recommended for the Prize by an academic institution, a higher education institution of Ukraine and the countries with which Ukraine has diplomatic relations, or the previous winners of the Prize.
Requirements for the research paper
- Only scientific papers are submitted for the Prize;
- Applicant research papers should be of international importance, belong to social and humanitarian sciences and be based on scientific understanding of historical or contemporary processes in the culture, politics and public life of Ukraine;
- The scholarly works must be published in the year when the call for submissions for the prize competition is announced, or in the two years which precede that year.
- The books shall contain ISBN.
- research work (a study, a monograph, thesis, book, cycles of lectures) of the size of at least 6 publishing sheets with bibliography in the subject of research.
The Prize shall be awarded for significant contribution to the development of Ukrainian studies or social and human sciences, for outstanding work or specific scientific discovery, which is a significant contribution to world science and culture.
Process of nomination
The following documents should be obligatory attached to the application for winning the Prize:
- decision of an academic institution or higher education institution to submit research paper for winning the Prize;
- bio of a person (persons) whose research work is nominated for the Award, with contact details of the nominee(s) for the Award;
- research work (a study, a monograph, thesis, book, cycles of lectures) of the size of at least 6 publishing sheets with the names of reviewers and a bibliography in the subject of research.
- the scientific work shall be submitted in 3 printed PDF duplicates, with the right to send the scientific work to the Members of the Nomination Committee, Members of the Expert Council and Jury;
- the extended abstract to the scientific work being submitted for the Prize;
- personal written consent of the author (authors) of the scientific work to participate in the competition for the Prize.
The documents are submitted in electronic form and three printed copies of the research paper with the author’s autograph should be mailed to the Committee of the Prize (01054, Kyiv, Volodymyrska St., 48a, of.15).
About the Fund
Ivan Franko International Fund was created in June 2015. International Fund is a non-governmental charitable organization.
The Fund aims to support the development of Ukrainian studies and social sciences, promotion and popularization of scientific and creative heritage of Ivan Franko.
The primary and the main objective of the Fund is establishment and implementation of Ivan Franko International Prize and promotion of its international recognition. International Prize will be awarded in two nominations: “for contribution to the development of Ukrainian studies”, “for significant personal contribution to the development of social sciences.”
Roland Franko, the grandson of Ivan Franko, is the initiator of creation of the Fund.
Ivan Franko
Ivan Franko is a rare and unique example of universal genius within the context of the world as well as in Ukrainian history – an all-round man and harmoniously developed personality who managed to unlock his potential not in one, but in many areas of culture and science. Great artist of the word, politician, scientist, philosopher, ethnographer and folklorist, prominent literary critic, essayist and translator, playwright and passionate tribune of the people – that is just who Ivan Franko is.
Ivan Franko is the author of numerous research papers on history and theory of literature, literary criticism, methodology and comparative studies, bibliography, book science, library science, linguistics, translation studies, journalism studies, folklore studies, ethnology, ethnography, cultural, art and religious studies, history, economics, sociology, statistics, law, political science, pedagogy, psychology, philosophy and descriptive natural sciences.
Contribution of Ivan Franko as a scientist in the creation and codification of many sectors of the national terminology and, more broadly – in the processes of intellectualization and functional-stylistic development of Ukrainian language is invaluable. Without any exaggeration, Franko may be called one of the main creators of Ukrainian scientific language.
Being a philosopher, Ivan Franko developed his own version of positivist conception of social progress and classification of sciences; he was a pioneer in the popularization of modern natural science knowledge, discoveries in astronomy, physics, chemistry, biology, in particular the theory of evolution.
Ivan Franko`s heritage includes integral historical-cultural concept of organic integrity and historical continuity of Ukrainian culture in chronological and ethnographic borders of its distribution. Ivan Franko laid scientific foundations of the theory and practice of intercultural communication, incessant and multidimensional dialogue between Ukrainians and representatives of other peoples and civilizations types.
In general, according to the aggregate data of bibliographic indexes, the scientist is the author of about 3 thousand scientific researches. Fluency in fourteen foreign languages enabled him to translate into Ukrainian language about 200 authors from 14 languages and 37 national literatures.
Fanatical diligence of Ivan Franko and persistence in achieving his goals resulted in a tremendous creative heritage – about 6000 works of literature!
Exceptional creative successes of Ivan Franko as a scientist is evidenced by wide recognition in the scientific world (Doctor`s Degree in Philosophy obtained in the University of Vienna, the degree of doctor honoris causa of Kharkiv University, membership in many Slavic scientific societies, numerous publications in Europe’s most prestigious scientific journals). Ivan Franko has become a universal doctor and Ukrainian Moses, man of action in the sphere of Europeanization and intellectualization of Ukraine, production and dissemination of scientific knowledge, intercultural dialogue and national consciousness.
