A petition on the allocation of a land plot in Kyiv for the erection of a monument to Ivan Franko has been registered on the website of Kyiv authorities. The initiator of the petition is the director of Ivan Franko International Fund – Ihor Kurus.

“Kyiv lacks a full-length monument to Franko – there is just his bust in the park next to the building of the National Drama Theatre. In our opinion, Ivan Franko is one of the founders of Ukrainian statehood, and therefore it seems appropriate to erect his monument near the monuments to Taras Shevchenko and Mykhailo Hrushevskyi in the public garden at the intersection of Volodymyrska Street and Shevchenko Boulevard,”- said the author of the petition, Ihor Kurus.

Director of the International Fund has also stressed that in 2016 Ukraine will celebrate the 160^th birthday and worship the 100^th anniversary of the death of the Great Kamenyar.

“For several years we have been trying to reach the government offices, but they do not hear or see us. Therefore, we want to achieve the erection of a monument to Ivan Franko in the city of Kyiv by using the petition as a tool of direct democracy,” – said Ihor Kurus.

Let us recall that the Decree of the President of Ukraine No. 727 “On Measures on the Study and Popularization of Spiritual Heritage of Ivan Franko” was issued in 2006 concerning the erection of a monument to Ivan Franko in Kyiv in 2006-2008 as a full-length composition.

Since yesterday, the portal of electronic petitions fully operates on the website of Kyiv authorities. Let us remind that by the decision of Kyiv City Council, the petition must win 10000 electronic signatures within three months. Required number achieved, the petition will be considered by the authorized officer and the relevant commission of Kyiv City Council and presented to the session. If the petition does not win the required number of voices, it can be set forward once again. Appeals containing obscenities and libel will not be registered.
